Writing Research Proposals

WRITING RESEARCH PROPOSALS

You are strongly encouraged to attend one of OURS’s workshops on Writing a Research Proposal. Some workshops are general, and some are specific to disciplines. See the Undergraduate Research Calendar for upcoming schedule and details. You do not need to register for the workshop in advance.

Your research proposal is the heart of your application. Start early so that you have time to incorporate faculty feedback.

RESEARCH CONSULTATIONS WITH SURF ADVISORS

After attending a research proposal workshop, you may request a research consultation with SURF Advisor in your field. You may schedule an appointment during their regularly scheduled office hours once you have a full draft of your application and need input about how to revise your essays and application materials. To access the sign-up sheet, please go to the SURF Advisor webpage.

If you have not yet made substantial progress on your application materials, you should first consult with either an OURS Peer Advisor or a UROC Peer Mentor.

USEFUL DOCUMENTS AND LINKS

OURS has a page devoted to strategies for Writing Research Proposals. The “resources” tab of the Haas Scholars website also has additional suggestions. There you will find documents related to 1) finding a mentor/lab, 2) getting a great recommendation letter, and 3) writing an excellent proposal, among other topics.
